Blog 10: Write Yourself Into the Part 1

Journal Entry 146; Day 1027 It has been a while since we've had actual toothpaste on board. We have been using early methods of toothpaste from the past such as chewing on leftover mint sprigs from our food supply. In regards to sustenance, we are still doing fairly good regarding our food supply, especially since we finally set up our hydro farm. Next month we should be able to harvest our first couple of crops, which should help future generations aboard the station until we reach Earth 2. Hopefully, with the failure of our first Earth, we have learned how to better take care of our environment and sustain our next planet. I will end the update here because today is my day for meal preparations :/ (I learned that from the social archive). Background: The Earth is no longer livable after humankind has exhausted every resource both genetically and nonrenewable.

Loropetalum or Fringe flower. This plant is a chinese fringe flower commonly used in shrubbery. Loropetalum is one sole genus of four different sub species. The plant has pink leafy flowers surrounded by evergreen branches.  Links:  https://floridata.com/plant/201 Group discussion: 10/28/22 at: 6:29pm till 7:03pm Gabi, Kalan, Cj Everyone this year is getting busy trying to balance school and the things going on in their personal lives. We were all talking about how our exams and big projects are all around the same time, but we are pushing through. We all agreed that we are doing pretty well in this course and how it’s important that we stay in track because this course is online. We all really liked how the blog posts teach us something; the bread making blog was so cool!! Gabi wasn’t able to plant anything last week but the others are doing fine!

Blog 8: Plant a Seed

Image
For this blog, I am starting my plant-a-seed process by germinating some Bell Pepper seeds from my dinner that I just made. Bell peppers were a spontaneous idea for me because I wanted to use something I already had around. I haven't germinated a seed since the infamous bean in a bag, which most of us did in elementary so I am excited to see if this works! Below are some photos of the process!

Blog 6: Bread Baking

l 1. Combine 3 cups of flour, 2 tsp of salt, 2tsp of yeast, and 1 1/2 cups of warm water 2. Cover with cling wrap and let sit for 2-3hrs in a warm environment 3. Preheat the oven to 450 and put the dutch oven in for 30mins to prewarm it. 4. Place dough in the oven for 30 mins with a lid, and 12 min without 5. enjoy! Making bread was actually really fun, and easier than I thought it would be. My favorite part was going back and watching the dough rise. I'm not usually a patient person but I had to wait for enough time for the yeast to start working. Overall I really loved this experience and I probably will be baking a lot of my bread from now on!!

Blog 4: Keep Your Trash

Discussion time/date/location: Sept 14th, 2022 6pm-6:32 via Zoom! Participants: ALL: Kalan Dixon, Cj Dierking, Gigi Descalzi This week, like my peers, didn’t have as much trash as I expected, I think this is because this week was very busy for me and I haven’t been home a lot. However, I did take notice that I had a lot of single-use snacks and food packages. Things like pringles can, fruit snack wrappers, and mini ice creams, haha. From our group discussion we found out that both I and Gigi had a cold, so we both had a lot of tissues, and I had a few Dayquil wrappers. I was also doing a garbage collection exercise in one of my other courses and one thing we talked about was that paper products take up the most mass in landfills today. Not plastic, not dirty, diapers (which is surprisingly a higher percentage as well), but all paper products. It really surprised me the number of paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, etc) I had in my trash. If I had to choose
